Telling folks to Dump IE in eWeek
July 7, 2004 at 10:36 AM
As I mentioned yesterday, eWeek.com interviewed me about the move to switch folks off of IE because of security concerns. I've been beating that drum a bit here which attracted some attention. Here's the article in eWeek, with a little blurb from me.
I think it's also interesting to note that because of the thesis of the article, he doesn't mention the other myriad perks to switching browsers. For me personally, these extra bells and whistles got me interested in making the switch, the security issues sealed it.

Yeah, the extra features are awesome. I really find FireFox to be a better browser. Period (and hey, it's only version .9). Tabbed browsing quickly becomes something you can't live without... which is absurd: One of MS' claims to fame was exploitation of the Multi-Document-Interface (tabs)... seems that IE should have implemented tabbed browsing years ago.
As for the security issues, frankly MS dropped the ball, and I hope it costs them dearly. Bill started the Secure Computing Initiative over a year ago. The IE team should have been re-assembled to completely overhaul IE into a more secure browser. Failure to do so was a huge mistake on the part of MS; considering how much market penetration the browser enjoys it was bound to become a target for hackers... and the recent rash of exploits and recomendations by even the FED that people abandon the browser are only symptoms of a bad decision made a long time ago...

Man OH man! I've been fire-foxing for months now.. it's a great browser.. for that matter, I'm on Linux, so I use Thunderbird for my mail clien, FireFox for my browser, Gaim for my chat client.. etc.. etc.. I've never had a security issue.. I even serve images off my work box to the web! Oh the wonders of Linux!
