Amazon.com redesign

Well, they redesigned their header I should say. A few interesting things to note:
1. Greatly simplified. How many tabs did they use to have? A zillion at one point. Now? 2.
2. They reduced it's footprint.
3. The shrunk their logo. A lot.
4. More aggresive integration with A9.
5. Search on the top instead of left bar.
6. Much less clutter up top.
Here's what it used to look like

Why do you suppose they did it? (this is your cue to participate :) )

yeah i think a billion tabs like they had sucked...everything needs to be simplistic...not cluttered with tabs and crap

Partly to reduce the footprint but also allows for premier advertising space in the upper left hand corner

I liked having all the tabs up there-- I felt more inclined to just click on one of them when they were all just sitting there for my eyes to wander over.
And I preferred the flatter look to all this curvature. It's like Sliding Doors Gone Bad.
And what's with all this tablature? Surely there aren't a lot of Amazon-ers still on IE4, are there?

I agree with the above poster. When there were more tabs at the top I would feel more inclined to browse the site. Now I go to search to find specifically what it is that I want rather than being lulled into impulse purchases. My opinion. Better for me, worse for amazon.
