Less preaching and more practicing

So 37signals launched Backpack today, which is their latest super cool hosted web app like Basecamp and Ta-da List.

But I noticed something when I pulled up the 37s web site today. See, 37signals didn't used to be a hosted web app company They used to be web designers. They specialized in making web sites easier to use. And they were super good. And brilliant marketers.

But they took the plunge. They stopped preaching and started practicing. Yes they've still got a link up there for "Consulting." But they aren't taking new customers right now (at least not big ones). Why? Because they're doing the hosted web app thing full steam ahead.

And I don't know the 37s guys - but I'm willing to wager that officially changing the focus of the 37s site from web development, to selling the hosted web apps was a day of much rejoicing and celebration. There's just something deeply satisfying about having yourself as your own client and knowing that you'll implement all your recommendations. It's also a thrill (and a frightening rush) to put your preaching to the test on your own behalf. There also comes with it a huge sense of vindication when it's successful (as 37s most certainly is). 37s has been preaching a certain philosophy to clients and now they can quit preaching and start practicing.

I don't know the 37signals crew, but I'd wager today started with champaign and high-fives.
